The Story of St Maarten
In 316 or 317 Saint Martinus, or Saint Maarten, was born in Sabaria in Hungary. His father had reached
the rank of an important officer in the Roman army. His son was named after the war god Mars. Martinus,
the brave, the couragious. The family moved to Pavia in Italy. One day, when Martinus was 10 years
old, he took shelter for a shower of rain in a church. What was going on in the church made a great
impression on him, so that later he became a Christian. When he was 15, as son of an officer, he had
to join the Roman army. He was sent to France and there happened the following. On a cold and
foggy day Saint Maarten and his soldiers ride to the city of Amiens. They had delivered a message from
the emperor and are on the way back. They want to be in the city before dark. When you are too late,
you find the gates closed and you have to wait till morning. It is cold and Saint Maarten and
his soldiers make haste. Just in time they arrive at the gate. At the moment saint Maarten
rides through the gate, in the dark, a scarcely dressed beggar steps forward. While shivering,
the man asks for money. Saint Maarten halts while the other soldiers go on. Saint Maarten
dismounts but he has no money on him and he thinks by himself about what he can do for such a poor man
while he has no money. |
