Tradition is that on the 11th of November when twilight sets in, children with chinese lanterns go from door to door to sing a few songs and so collect sweets.

Here you see the house in the winter.
You have now seen a lot about the family and may be you wonder what they would play in winter.

But is it true ?
Your guess is as good as mine.
However, when you follow the guided Winter Tour, than it may be revealed.

Since august 2003 there is in the little front garden an enormous statue of "Saint Teresa of Lisieux". However there is no historical or other connection with this Saint.

The Story of St Maarten

In 316 or 317 Saint Martinus, or Saint Maarten, was born in Sabaria in Hungary. His father had reached the rank of an important officer in the Roman army. His son was named after the war god Mars. Martinus, the brave, the couragious.   The family moved to Pavia in Italy. One day, when Martinus was 10 years old, he took shelter for a shower of rain in a church. What was going on in the church made a great impression on him, so that later he became a Christian. When he was 15, as son of an officer, he had to join the Roman army.
He was sent to France and there happened the following.
On a cold and foggy day Saint Maarten and his soldiers ride to the city of Amiens. They had delivered a message from the emperor and are on the way back. They want to be in the city before dark. When you are too late, you find the gates closed and you have to wait till morning.   It is cold and Saint Maarten and his soldiers make haste.   Just in time they arrive at the gate.   At the moment saint Maarten rides through the gate, in the dark, a scarcely dressed beggar steps forward.   While shivering, the man asks for money.   Saint Maarten halts while the other soldiers go on. Saint Maarten dismounts but he has no money on him and he thinks by himself about what he can do for such a poor man while he has no money.

Suddenly he draws his sword.   With the sharp sword he cuts his soldiers robe into two pieces.
The biggest piece he gives to the beggar, who goes away in good spirits for he is clad.
But the companians of Saint Maarten laugh at him : "That will cost you a new robe."
That night Saint Maarten had a dream.   In that dream Jesus comes to him, clad only in half a soldiers robe.
But that he had given to the poor beggar.   Than he hears Jesus say to the angels : "Here is Maarten, the Roman soldier who is not baptised, he has clad me."

The dream had such an impact on saint Maarten that he got baptised the next day and became a christian.   He decides to leave the army and become a monk near the city of Tours.   He did a lot of good work so that he became famous in the area.
One day, the bishop of the city of Tours dies and people want Saint Maarten as bishop, but Saint Maarten does not want that.   One day he sees a lot of people looking for him.   What to do ?   Where can he hide ?   He decides to hide in a goose shed but the geese did not approve and began to gaggle loodly.   So loud that people find him and he is taken away to the city where he is made bishop.
However, Saint Maarten remains a simple man and does a lot of good works.
He died in the age of 85.
